EASTON EMS | NEARLY EIGHT DECADES OF SERVICE, COMMITMENT, AND COMMUNITY

For generations, Easton Volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EVEMS) has stood at the heart of the town’s safety net, responding to emergencies, training future medical professionals, and strengthening the bond between residents and first responders. As Easton evolves, so does its EMS service, blending tradition with forward-thinking improvements while never losing sight of its mission: to compassionately deliver excellent pre-hospital care and protect the public's health and safety year-round.

A LEGACY OF SERVICE SINCE 1946

Easton EMS has been serving the community since 1946, making it one of the region’s most enduring volunteer-based emergency agencies. What began as a small group of dedicated residents has grown into a robust, formally structured EMS organization that supports thousands of households and visitors every year. Yet through all the growth, one thing has remained unchanged: Easton EMS exists for Easton, powered mainly by Easton.

HOW EASTON EMS OPERATES TODAY

The organizational structure reflects the professionalism and dedication required to run a modern emergency service. The department is led by a Chief, two Assistant Chiefs, and a team of Directors, Trustees, and Commissioners who oversee operations and ensure high standards.

Staffing is a blend of paid professionals and volunteers:

  • 2 full-time EMTs on-site Monday through Friday

  • Per diem EMTs covering daytime and weekend shifts

  • 22 active volunteers, filling most hours throughout the week

  • Live-in personnel, primarily university students pursuing careers as PAs, RNs, or emergency professionals, who receive free room and board in exchange for overnight shift coverage

This hybrid model ensures rapid response times while preserving the spirit of community-driven service that defines Easton EMS.

FACILITIES BUILT FOR THE FUTURE

While the permanent headquarters remains at 448 Sport Hill Road, operations are temporarily housed at 659 Sport Hill Road during construction of the new EMS building. The updated facility will significantly expand Easton EMS’s capabilities with:

  • Increased sleeping quarters

  • Larger training spaces

  • Enhanced storage for supplies and vehicles

These upgrades support both rising call volume and the agency’s expanding role within the region.

RISING CALL VOLUME, EXPANDING RESPONSIBILITY

Easton EMS primarily responds within the town but also provides mutual aid to Trumbull, Monroe, Redding, Fairfield, and Bridgeport. Over time, the call volume has steadily increased from 407 in 2011 to 628 in 2022, and is projected to stabilize at 547 in 2025. Each call reflects a moment when a neighbor needed help, and Easton EMS was there.

RISING CALL VOLUME, EXPANDING RESPONSIBILITY

As a Basic Life Support (BLS) service, Easton EMS delivers critical emergency response, stabilization, and transport. When advanced care is required, regional paramedic intercept partners, including AMR and Trumbull EMS, join the response.

But Easton EMS does far more than answer 911 calls. Their community engagement is wide-ranging and proactive:

  • Monthly blood pressure screenings at the Senior Center

  • Touch-a-Truck and school outreach events

  • Trunk-or-Treat and Operation Santa

  • Rides to School and wellness checks

  • Event standbys for fairs, parades, and fireworks

  • Internal and regional drills with hospitals and EMS agencies

The organization is also one of only two state-approved EMT practical testing sites in Western Connecticut, hosting certification exams for agencies across Fairfield, Litchfield, and parts of New Haven County.

FUNDING A COMMUNITY LIFELINE

Easton EMS is primarily funded through the town budget, operating at or below $400,000 annually. Insurance-only billing brings an additional $133,000 back to the town each year. To strengthen financial stability, EVEMS maintains active fundraising efforts such as:

  • Annual mailer appeal

  • Bottle and can collections

  • The beloved Fall Fireworks Fundraiser

TRAINING, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE NEXT GENERATION

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Easton EMS. To join, individuals must hold EMT certification and complete internal training and orientation before being paired with a Field Training Officer. The minimum commitment is one 6-hour shift per week, though many volunteers choose to do more.

The agency trains approximately 200 EMT students per year, many of whom complete accelerated summer and winter courses. With above-average pass rates on the National Registry exam, Easton EMS is a proven launchpad for careers in healthcare and emergency services.

Live-in volunteers, mainly college students, offer overnight coverage in exchange for free housing, gaining invaluable real-world experience while supporting the town.

Retention strategies include:

  • A tax honorarium program ($1,000–$2,000 annually)

  • $25 weekend/overnight call gift cards

  • Ongoing training, mentoring, and advancement opportunities

PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED

Easton EMS trains regularly for major incidents, including active shooter scenarios, mass-casualty events, aircraft emergencies, and regional disasters. Both ambulances carry comprehensive MCI kits, bleeding control supplies, and protective equipment. Collaboration with local police, fire, dispatch, and hospitals ensures seamless coordination when seconds matter most.

CHALLENGES AND THE PATH AHEAD

Like many EMS organizations nationwide, Easton EMS faces challenges: recruiting new volunteers, adapting to evolving medical standards, and securing funding for state-of-the-art equipment.

Yet the future is bright. Once the new building opens, EVEMS will expand its live-in program, strengthen partnerships with the State Office of EMS, increase EMT testing availability, and enhance training programs for EMTs, EMRs, and CPR students. All of these initiatives aim to build a stronger, more resilient emergency medical system for Easton.

HOW RESIDENTS CAN SUPPORT EASTON EMS

The message from EVEMS is clear: Get involved. Volunteer, take a class, or join the live-in program. If you cannot serve, financial contributions directly sustain life-saving services. Even spreading awareness about the agency’s work helps strengthen the community’s connection to its first responders.

For nearly 80 years, Easton EMS has answered every call day or night, rain or shine, with professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication. Their story is one of community, courage, and care, and it continues to evolve with every resident who steps up to support the mission.
